B+W gray graduated filters are used to darken the sky or foreground. They are each tinted half neutral gray, which smoothly transitions into the uncolored filter half. The rotatable B+W filter mount enables exact horizontal alignment when the filter is screwed on.

The basis of a B+W 701 gray graduated filter is a ground and finely polished glass substrate of the highest quality. Due to their stability, glass substrates are very durable compared to plastic substrates, which scratch very easily. A B+W gray graduated filter is mainly used to compensate for a sky that is too bright. For exposure metering, the camera or hand-held exposure meter should be aimed downwards at the foreground to be correctly exposed without a graduated filter. This almost always automatically produces the optimum effect for the sky.

Exposure allowances to compensate for the absorption in the dense part of the graduated filter should be small so that the filter effect is not weakened too much! If the exposure is measured through the filter, a minus correction of around 0.5 light values can be advantageous.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The gray gradient is applied using thin-film technology. The special coating process requires special masking. This is associated with certain manufacturing tolerances with the result that the gradient boundary is not exactly parallel.

As this transition is outside the focus range, the effect is not visible and there is no static transition.

BASIC graduated filter 701 (50 %)
The neutral grey half of this graduated filter with a permeability of 50 % (1 f-stop) darkens the relevant subject area by one f-stop without changing the color. If, for example, the sky is too bright relative to the landscape, this is the ideal value for good cloud detail and to prevent the blue sky from fading due to overexposure.
