  • EXMOR R CMOS sensor (type 1.0 inch) with 20.1 megapixels (effective)
  • ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T Lens with 24-70 mm and an aperture of F1.8-2.8
  • Integrated OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder (EVF)
  • 180 º tiltable LC display for selfies
Big technology in a small body
The compact body is made of aluminum, making it as sturdy as it is lightweight. This makes the RX100 III predestined for not missing a single moment while traveling. Despite its compact dimensions, the body offers space for an image sensor whose light-sensitive area is four times larger than that of conventional compact cameras. The RX100 III's Exmor R CMOS image sensor, with an effective resolution of 20.1 megapixels, shines with its special back-illuminated design that allows for great images even in difficult lighting conditions. It is also the key that opens the door to numerous background effects for the photographer when shooting.

Such a sensor, designed for high sensitivity and low image noise, requires a powerful image processor to meet the increased demands. That's why Sony relies on a new generation of image processor in the RX100 III, the BIONZ X. It works three times faster than the previous generation. It works three times faster than the previous version and features the latest technologies for reproducing even the finest image details, reducing light refraction at small apertures, and selectively suppressing image noise when shooting in low light.

More light and wide angle - the new Lens of the RX100 III
Compared to the previous model, the new ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens of the Sony RX100 III presents itself with F1.8-2.8 significantly faster in the upper zoom range up to 70 millimeters (compared to 35 mm format). Sony has extended the lower focal length range to 24 millimeters, which means that larger wide-angle shots are now possible. This recommends the camera for landscape shots and thus once again as a travel companion. At the same time, the new light intensity allows for faster shutter speeds, so that fast subjects can be captured more sharply. The integrated gray filter opens up additional creative possibilities for experienced photographers - especially when shooting under sunlight.

Electronic viewfinder and pop-up display
Another improvement over its predecessor proves especially useful in bright shooting situations: the new RX100 III is equipped with an electronic OLED viewfinder. The pop-up viewfinder is bright and detailed - and also free of reflections thanks to a ZEISS T* coating. It guides the user to the subject when the display reaches its limits in too much sun. If a cloud suddenly darkens the sky, the user does not have to frantically search for the right control button: The RX100 III has an alert sensor close to the viewfinder and therefore automatically switches to the display as soon as the eye moves away from the viewfinder.

The large display with a diameter of 7.5 centimeters (three inches) can be rotated 180 degrees upwards and 45 degrees downwards. This makes shooting from difficult perspectives child's play. What's more, "selfies" now also turn out perfectly, since the photographer can see himself on the display when he takes a picture of himself.

Now many more options for videographers
The RX100 III also opens up new options for filmmakers. The improved BIONZ X image processor enables recording in the XAVC S standard. Videos are thus recorded at a data rate of up to 50 Mbps. At the same time, artifacts and image noise are minimized. Moreover, thanks to the fast processor, clips can be recorded at 100 frames per second. This allows for very sharp slow motion playback when playing back the recording at the usual 25 frames per second. The matching PlayMemories Home software is of course available from Sony. In addition, the optical SteadyShot image stabilizer and the Intelligent Active Mode sharpen photo and video recordings, respectively, by specifically compensating for camera shake.

Also new in the RX100 III is the 4K output of photos via suitable TVs via HDMI or WiFi. The special feature: The camera transmits additional image data to the TV, which can only be properly interpreted by Sony's 4K Ultra HD TV sets. Thanks to Triluminos technology, BRAVIA TVs therefore display photos from the RX100 III in an expanded color space that cannot be reproduced by conventional TVs. In addition to WiFi, NFC is also already integrated into the camera.

Furthermore, the RX100 III has several features and video functions that are otherwise only found in Sony camcorders. For example, the new camera allows you to save Full HD recordings on an external storage medium without loss via HDMI output. The so-called Zebra function marks overexposed areas of a subject with a striped pattern on the display and in the viewfinder. The peaking function is just as helpful - especially when taking pictures with foreground or background blur. It shows which areas of the subject are in focus. In addition, the camera can simultaneously record a video in AVCHD/XAVC S and in the Internet-ready MP4 format.

RX100 III from Sony: a customized camera
The possibilities for using the RX100 III for photo and video shooting are continuously expanding. After all, the RX100 III is the first offspring of the RX family that also allows filming via manual mode, program, aperture or aperture priority in video mode. In addition, the number of free and paid PlayMemories Camera Apps is growing. They expand the camera with new filters, effects and functions. However, the RX100 III is already equipped with 13 image effects, such as miniaturization and HDR painting, so that even amateurs can take pictures with that special something.

Whether beginner or photo expert - all will appreciate the advantages in the operation of the RX100 III: Control buttons and the dial on the Lens can be assigned to any function for the most part. This way, the user always enjoys quick access to those functions that are most important to him. In the end, no two Cyber-shot RX100 IIIs are alike - because each one adapts exactly to the needs of its owner through the settings and its equipment with PlayMemories Camera Apps.

The tilt shift effect is certainly an old shoe for many photographers, but this effect is very interesting to consider because it can be found in many facets of photography, so the use of tilt shift optics is not only at home in architectural photography.
